Warning graphic report and images The annual Yulin Festival, or to give it a better name, the Yulin dog massacre, took place in June 2014. The fight is already on to prevent such horror in 2015. The petitions online however are not receiving prominent display but they must be accessed in order to stop this terrible animal cruelty. On June 21, 2014 the Yulin Dog Eating Festival, a yearly tradition in Yulin, Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region of China, a festival, deeply rooted in ancient Chinese tradition, began. Thousands of dogs are killed and eaten, and the killing is anything but humane. Where do all the dogs come from? They are stolen or rounded up as strays, packed tightly into overcrowded cages and transported for a horrific death. For some of the local people it is a much loved tradition which they cling to even though others around the world view this festival with shock and horror. In recent years animal rights groups have fought hard to stop this barbaric festival but to no avail. Read - Horror upon Horror with Chinas animal cruelty and abuse Fur sales eBay and china

If a doctor was found to have committed acts of depravity against his patients he would have the book thrown at him but what happens to a vet who does just that to animals in his care? Oliver Fraser Lown, 28, of Kesgrave, Suffolk, may have been bright enough to become a vet but thankfully he was not bright enough to cover his tracks of abuse. He videoed himself having sex with a dog, and a horse, at a farm in what is often called "James Herriot “country, in Yorkshire. He also boasted online and finally a tell-tale greeny-blue star tattoo on his calf area gave him away during footage of acts of depravity with a horse. Herriot was a caring vet whose real-life adventures were turned into a series of books, TV series and movie. He would no doubt turn in his grave at the thought of Lown's obscene and abusive pornographic images and footage. The Daily Mirror reports "The Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons disciplinary committee [said] five charges [were] proven against Lown, of Kesgrave, Suffolk, that he possessed extreme images and videos of people, himself and others having sex with various animals, including a man and a sheep". Perhaps most shocking is the fact that this man has previous form. In 2012 he pleaded guilty to seven criminal charges relating to the possession of extreme images involving people and animals, for which he was given a conditional discharge. Vancouver Man Charged With Bestiality Animal brothels Germany He was not charged with bestiality but that was proven according to the Royal College. Other images of abuse and depravity found in his possession date back to 2009. So why was he allowed to continue practising as a vet? That could be because he graduated from Szent Istvan University in Budapest, Hungary and he had been registered with the RCVS in 2013. Either way a human being, and I use that description loosely, not fit for purpose as a vet. Opinion: Lown has been banned from working as a vet in the UK but he should be jailed. You can read the full details of abuse here at the Daily Mirror Commentary: The annual seal slaughter in Canada has faced a setback as the EU’s ban on products such as pelts is upheld by the World Trade Organisation. PETA, the charity that fights for the ethical treatment of animals around the world, campaigns against the Canadian seal slaughter and has made some in roads in recent years. However the slaughter continues. In July 2012 TEK reported “PETA want and need support for Canadian Senator Mac Harb, who has introduced an historic bill to end Canada's annual commercial slaughter of seal pups. The legislation acknowledges that there is no longer a market for seal pelts, since Russia banned seal fur imports. Russia had in the past been importing 95 per cent of Canadian seal fur. The US, the European Union, Mexico plus other countries have also banned seal fur imports. Of course some people maintain that the cull is simply a necessity to keep the number of seals under control, blaming seals for damaging the fishing industry”. It looked as if the days of seal pups battered to death were drawing to an end but the killing continues. Cynics claim the only people making money these days out of the seal hunt are campaign groups such as PETA, but if that is the case why continue? If the number of seals threatens fish stocks there must be a more humane way to cull numbers than shooting them or beating them to death? The EU ban may be applauded but there are claims that it operates on an unfair playing field. Claims by the EU that the ban is "necessary to protect public morals" regarding animal welfare when it exempts seal products from Inuit or indigenous communities are questionable. These exemptions resulted in groups challenging the WTO ruling. Canada and Norway challenged the 2010 ruling but lost. That decision is still being scrutinised as it has fair trade implications. The Huffington Post reports “Terry Audla, president of the Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami representing about 55,000 Canadian Inuit, said his people were never consulted and never agreed with the embargo or its uneven exceptions. "I am morally outraged at the self-righteousness and sanctimoniousness of the EU's claim to protect the morals of its citizens," he said in a statement.” PETAs stance is this: “More than 50,000 seals have been killed already this year, and the slaughter is still going on. We may not be able to run onto the ice to stand between a baby seal and a rifle or the sharp end of a hakapik, but we can help end the massacre by calling on Canadian officials to stop the slaughter and support a government buyout. The market for seal fur is virtually non-existent, and the Fisheries Minister admitted last month that China has rejected seal meat. Please, share this video with everyone you know and speak up to end what the late, great Farley Mowat called “perhaps the most atrocious single trespass by human beings against the living world that’s taking place today”.” Although a fair number of famous people have protested about the Canadian seal slaughter in "1978, marine ecologist Jacques Cousteau criticized the focus on the seal hunt, arguing it is entirely emotional: "We have to be logical. We have to aim our activity first to the endangered species. Those who are moved by the plight of the harp seal could also be moved by the plight of the pig – the way they are slaughtered is horrible".
Sources: NPR The Star Huffington Post This story, like some others in the animal blog, comes by way of an online petition. It is a gruesome tale which must be publicised with the individuals involved facing justice. It is not an easy read but please do your best. It begins with the initial email and an April 20 update follows: "On April 9, a father and a his 16 year old son tied a dog to their car and dragged him for several km. A police car spotted them and tried to stop them, the car lost control and ended up in a ditch. The dog was still alive but died at the veterinary clinic, no more flesh on his body, only bones and blood. Right now the two criminals are still walking free and their names haven't become public. The law should guarantee up to 4 years of prison time for torturing and killing this animal, but too often our justice system disregards these laws and does nothing to punish these criminals. Many animal torturers are simply asked to pay a small fee. We need support from all over the world to let institutions in Italy know that we are not going to tolerate any excuse for not applying the maximum penalty applicable. The whole crime was caught on tape and it was the police themselves that intercepted and stopped these animal torturers! these people are undoubtedly guilty! In attesa di un vostro riscontro porgo i miei più cordiali saluti, Nome e Cognome” and mail our Institutions: [email protected], [email protected], [email protected], [email protected], [email protected], [email protected], [email protected], [email protected], [email protected], [email protected], [email protected] Update #1 April 20, 2014: "Thank you all for your support, it's incredible how many have shown to care! Two years later little has changed to stop the deaths. The death toll as per Race horse Deathwatch now stands at 1091 Deaths in 2584 Days. A staggering increase which equates to ten horses a month since 2012. The race horse deathwatch website details the name of each horse that has died its injuries. The number destroyed, as worthless after making their owners money, is sickening. 41 have died since the start of 2014. Animal Aid staged a protest this year at the three-day Grand National annual event. The protests have become an annual event and are also held outside the Grand National's broadcasting studios, at Channel 4. Fiona Pereira of Animal Aid, said: “We have come along today to show our opposition to the grand national but also to try and tell people that there is an alternative to betting to the Grand National, people can use their money instead to help to fund horse sanctuaries which rescue horses amongst other equines as well. “Horses are the only animals for whom it is supposed to be permissible to beat them in public for nothing more than entertainment." Background and earlier report In March 2012 T.E.K. reported that horse deaths had sadly occurred during The Cheltenham Festival in the U.K. It was March 14 and the official death watch figures showed that, there had been 804 horse deaths in 1830 days. Just 30 days later that death toll has risen to 816. That means that 14 race horses have tragically lost their lives during that brief time. The race horse death watch was created by animal aid. The website explains, "Race Horse Death Watch was launched during the 2007 Cheltenham Festival. Its purpose is to expose and record every on-course Thoroughbred fatality in Britain. The horse racing authorities have resolutely failed to put horse death information into the public domain, preferring to dismiss equine fatalities as ‘accidental’ and ‘unexplained’. Even when several horses die at a single meeting, the term ‘statistical blip’ is often deployed. Animal Aid has produced a series of revealing reports over the last seven years exposing the welfare problems associated with Thoroughbred breeding, racing, training and disposal of commercially ‘unproductive’ horses. Our research indicates that around 420 horses are raced to death every year. About 38 per cent die on racecourses, while the others are destroyed as a result of training injuries, or are killed because they are no longer commercially viable". What a terrible state of affairs. These magnificent animals are used for mankind's own purpose with often careless disregard. All for the sake of making money, when all is said and done. If UK horse racing is to continue surely it must improve its animal welfare a great deal. You do have to wonder if this is not another so called "sport" that has had its day. Today April 14, 2012 the annual steeplechase the Grand National has been run. Of 40 horses and riders only 15 horses completed the race. To date two horses have been reported dead. Two too many. Time for a re-think, for sure. And if you enjoy a flutter on the horses, especially the National, you are a party to the killing. |
